Last night, I arrived at the small storefront at 5:00 PM. Danji opens at 5:15 PM, so I expected to be the only one waiting outside, but I was surprised to find that I was one of many people waiting outside the restaurant on West 52nd Street. We were seated by 5:15 PM and by 5:45 PM, the 36-seat restaurant was completely full.
We were told to order about seven small plates for the three of us, and it ended up being plenty of food. They were very accommodating of my allergies and while I sometimes struggle with some Asian cuisines, I could eat most things on the menu, with some substitutions. The food was unique, creative, and mouth-wateringly delicious. All three of us left the restaurant feeling like we had just discovered a culinary gem in New York City.
We ordered the garlic honey wings with sesame seeds, grilled pork belly and aged kimchi with organic tofu, braised short ribs with fingerlings and pearl onions, spicy yellowtail sashimi with jalepeno and cho jang sauce, braised pork with dehydrated scallions and kimchi in a cabbage wrap, and bulgogi sliders with pickled cucumber and scallion salsa. YUM. It was amazing. LB and I will definitely be returning to Danji in the near future for another delicious meal!
